Kresge Arts in Detroit is honored to present the inaugural Kresge Artist Fellows in the Visual Arts. The Fellowships, each including a $25,000 prize funded by The Kresge Foundation, are awarded annually to visual, performing and literary artists and are the largest such awards available to individual artists in metropolitan Detroit.

The 2009 Fellows in the Visual Arts are both emerging and established artists, who represent a broad range of artistic disciplines and practices, including painting, sculpture, photography, installation, video, book arts, fiber arts and printmaking. The fellowships provide artists with the time and resources to explore, to experiment and to develop their work more fully over the year-long fellowship period. The fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis and the awardees were selected from hundreds of applications by a panel of distinguished local and national artists and arts professionals. Kresge Arts in Detroit is grateful to Susan Bandes, Aaron Betsky, Dick Goody, Lorna Simpson, and Richard Tuttle, for the valuable contributions and expertise they brought to their work as panelists.

The 18 fellows below are representative of the exceptional talents of the visual artists living and working in metropolitan Detroit. Kresge Arts in Detroit is pleased to provide the support that will help these outstanding artists continue to pursue their professional careers and contribute to the cultural vitality of our city and region.
